Structuring factors of the spatio-temporal variability of macrozoobenthos assemblages in a southern Mediterranean lagoon: How useful for bioindicatio…

2017

International audience; The authors investigated the impact of the extension of the El Kantra Channel on the composition and structure of macrobenthic assemblages in Boughrara Lagoon (Gulf of Gabes, Tunisia along with the use of 4 biotic indices (AMBI, BENTIX, M-AMBI and TUBI). Thirteen stations were sampled seasonally in 2012–2013. Forty-one species were found in 2012–2013 not recorded in 2009–2010, including 20 species of polychaetes belonging to the trophic groups of deposit-feeders and carnivores which are expected to increase in areas disturbed by organic pollution. During the survey, we recorded a high fish mortality, essentially caused by the development of harmful algal blooms (HAB)…

Monitoring Coastal Lagoon Water Quality Through Remote Sensing: The Mar Menor as a Case Study

2019

The Mar Menor is a hypersaline coastal lagoon located in the southeast of Spain. This fragile ecosystem is suffering several human pressures, such as nutrient and sediment inputs from agriculture and other activities and decreases in salinity. Therefore, the development of an operational system to monitor its evolution is crucial to know the cause-effect relationships and preserve the natural system. The evolution and variability of the turbidity and chlorophyll-a levels in the Mar Menor water body were studied here through the joint use of remote sensing techniques and in situ data. The research was undertaken using Operational Land Imager (OLI) images on Landsat 8 and two SPOT images, bec…

Past and future spatio-temporal variability of rainfall of the Bani catchment in West Africa.

2011

6 pages; International audience; Since 1970, on the Bani, main tributary of the upper Niger, annual discharges have decreased by 69% while annual rainfall has decreased only by 15% to 25% over the catchment. Among the possible causes for this very strong discharge decrease changes of precipitation patterns must be explored. Four different methods of spatial interpolation of rainfall fields were compared on intra-seasonal indices (number of dry days, the dry spells, EDI, SPI, etc.) for the period 1950-2006. This study was also conducted on simulated pluviometric data generated by a regional climatic model (WRF) for the 2032-2041 period. The pluviometric deficit is explained by a conjunction …

Bathymetry time series using high spatial resolution satellite images

2020

The use of the new generation of remote sensors, such as echo sounders and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receivers with differential correction installed in a drone, allows the acquisition of high-precision data in areas of shallow water, as in the case of the channel of the Encañizadas in the Mar Menor lagoon. This high precision information is the first step to develop the methodology to monitor the bathymetry of the Mar Menor channels. The use of high spatial resolution satellite images is the solution for monitoring many hydrological changes and it is the basis of the three-dimensional (3D) numerical models used to study transport over time, environmental variability, and wa…
